Faxanadu landed in our
hands without warning. We were about to unknowingly
embark on a 2-month adventure of a lifetime. It's as
if the real world had ceased to exist. Faxanadu took
over our lives.

Faxanadu is a fantastic action-RPG and still
deserves to be referenced by developers.
Unfortunately, the game was a sleeper
hit as it was
ahead of its time and never gained the attention it
should have. The RPG audience was either blinded by
pen and paper or simply unaware of the genre. Be
careful when reading other reviews about this game -
many have never completed the adventure and dare to
write about it. Faxanadu is a long and very
difficult game and deserves to be played to the end
before any comment is made. There are many worlds to
travel and each is worth the time.

Faxanadu
is a 5/5 star title. Graphics were unbeatable,
although some might argue its overuse of brown
shades. But one quickly realizes that Faxanadu is
quite colourful when investing enough time to
venture forth. The choice of realistic shades served
to set the atmosphere, so successfully that it
pulled players into an immersing and believable
world.
Hands down, music surpassed that of any other NES
game. Eighteen years later, its tunes are still
occasionally whistled and hummed at Yamisoft. Sound,
on the other hand, was limited, but fit the eerie
theme very well.

Gameplay was
absolutely marvelous. A day of blood and sweat
was well worth the rewards Faxanadu offered
through its weapons, armor, and magic.
Although the controls were tricky, they
eventually became second nature with enough
practice. The feeling of appreciation,
accomplishment, and pride following the
exchange of gold for stronger armour has yet
to resurface when playing today's action-RPGs.
No game today leaves one trembling and
sweating as much as Faxanadu did during the
dragon battles. Oh sweet Dragon Slayer, how we
miss the sense of achievement upon setting
hands on you… how we miss your sense of
power when wielded… how we miss the long
weeks of struggles to acquire you… our
ventures today have yet to touch the very
depths of our warrior souls such as you did.
Foes were hideous and worlds communicated
feelings. For every effort there was a sense
of fulfillment. Best of all, Faxanadu's
password system let you "save" your
progress without spoiling you with today's
instant-save-for-lazy-players option. Part of
the fun was to find the next Guru and be
blessed with your own personal mantra.
A title always kept in mind when brainstorming
our next game ideas.
